The River Sargauth is the lifeblood of the caverns of Undermountain. The River starts its life deep in the caverns away from Halaster's lair. A salty sea as large as any surface sea held in an enormous dome cavern is the start of the Sargauth. The Sargauth is purified as it flows through portals that Halaster has set up along its path to direct the river as he sees fit.

The merchants and slavers of Skullport use the river to trade goods between those who dwell in the darkest depths of Undermountain and those who dwell on the surface, most notably, Duke Araken.

Deep in Undermountain, the river flows through a myriad of caverns for reasons that only Halaster is aware. Many rumors and legends surround the river and its path including the infamous magical forest that can be seen through a niche in a cavern wall near where the waters from the Hidden Sea pour out of the first purifying portal. Also, the long lived species of Undermountain speak of the Sunken City of the Dwarves... a city that Halaster drowned to every man, woman and child, by forcing the river to flow directly through their underground city.

The undead water animals populate the waters deeper in Undermountain, the same as they do near Skullport. However, in the deeper caverns, living monsters swim the waters and dark beings walk the cavern shores the river passes by. A wise merchant would stop for nothing, not even his own mother.
