Welcome to the newbie section of my page. This site will be brief and not go into too much detail. After all, discovering for yourself what works best is half the fun. For true newbies, I suggest you read all four in order. Please remember, if at any time you have a question about what I have written here, or a question comes up that I didn't answer, you can ask other mudders when you get online. On this page I have four topics:

  1. Brief explanation of Tempus.
  2. Deciding what type of character is right for you.
  3. How exactly you roll a character and why it is important to take your time while doing so.
  4. Starting to play your character.

If you're not a newbie, you really don't need to read this. Click here to go back to the previous page.

"What the heck is Tempus and what is a character?"

Tempus is a text-based role playing game that is played online with other people from around the world. The people that play use what is called a character on the game. Each person controls and develops these characters into whatever the player wants it to be.

Once you have a character, you use it to kill mobs(computer controlled characters). After you kill something, you gain experience points. After you obtain a certain number of experience points, your character levels and it becomes stronger allowing you to kill harder mobs which give more experience. These are the basics.

If you choose to, after you have a higher level character, you can Pkill or Player-Kill. This means you don't kill just mobs, but you actually kill other people's characters on the mud. Just a warning though, when you kill someone, their biggest baddest buddy may be waiting for you next time you get on. Use your discression.

"What type of character should I play?"

This is one of the most common questions I have heard when it comes to new players in the world of Tempus. For me to answer this question, you will have to answer a few questions yourself.

If you want to have strong attack power and large amounts of hit points(your life, A.K.A. hps), I suggest you play barb, ranger, or borg. These classes are fairly easy to keep alive and level through their mortal gen.

If you want to be fast and are interested in pkillig, I suggest monk or thief. These two classes depend on their hard hitting abilities but do not have the hps or defense that rangers and borgs have.

If you like magic and want to use it but still want to hit hard, try out a knight. This is the most well-rounded of all classes. They hit hard, can use spells, and have a good defense.

If you like magic more than that and want to depend on it, try either phyz, mage, psion, or cleric. These classes are more difficult to level because they have low hps, and low defense. They are extremely strong once they remort a few times.

Give them a try, if you don't like them you can always make a new character. I also left some classes out of this because of their lack of skills. Having a good skills list for a new player helps a lot.

"How do I roll my character and does it really matter if I enjoy intelligent conversations with grass?"

Well, to put it bluntly, yes. Your attributes do matter. If you play a character that has a bad roll, it is a big hassle later on. For the most part, you want to have a high con, wis, str, and dex. A high roll would be "exceptionally." Again use your common sense, "very strong" is going to be better than "your strength is average."

Take your time, there is no rush. This will be the most important thing you do as a new player. If you don't want to do it, and don't want to chance a bad roll, ask somone you know to roll your character.

"What the heck do I do now?!?!?!?"

If you have done everything else on this checklist, then you are ready to learn how to play. First thing is first. Type these words in:

After everytime you hit enter it should have done something new to your screen. This will help you. Also, for your reading pleasure, the mud is equiped with a help file. Type in help for instructions on how to fight, talk, and become a better mudder. Your first task is the Newbie Tower, if you can't find it on your own, ask someone for help. This ends my tutorial on how to get started.
